Pregnant… Can you have a Massage?

A couple of my clients have fallen pregnant in the last few months. Congratulations – you may be reading this too after just finding out your own news… or you may already by pregnant.

Like you they both asked me similar questions (they don’t know each other) and this has led me to want to share my knowledge on here for all to see.

 Q:   I have just found out I am pregnant, can I still have a massage?

  1. Yes you can.  As long as you are in good health and your doctor approves, there is no reason why you should not continue enjoying your massage throughout your entire pregnancy.  Working with you we can devise a routine that will nurture you both physically and emotionally throughout the three trimesters.  Your baby will get lots of benefit from your massage as well with as all those biochemicals that are released during a massage will relax both them of you.

 

During your pregnancy your body goes through lots of changes and you may feel very tired and short of breath.  This is because your body is adjusting to the hormones of pregnancy.  A massage can help to energize you so that you can continue your normal life.  As you gain weight your posture may change leaving you with aches and pains.  We can focus on each area as it happens and using different massage techniques I can help to relieve this stiffness before it gets too bad.

Although this is a thrilling experience it is often fraught with emotional concerns, conflicting feelings as well as the physical discomforts.  Giving yourself time to come and discuss these emotions without being judged and without opinions I can help you through this exciting time.

Sometimes you may feel like your body has been taken over by an alien force and in the early months moods swings from ecstasy to unpredictable crying can be the norm for some.  Later on there are aches and pains, nausea, heartburn, raging hormones, breast pain and swollen legs.  The gentle, noninvasive approach of massage can ease your discomfort and help you to focus on your body.  Massage sessions can also bring back a sense of body-mind integration, making you feel relaxed and calm during your journey into parenthood.  I will use a lighter touch and try to concentrate each session on the area that is bothering you the most.

Massage has been scientifically proven to stimulate the blood and lymph systems, thereby increasing immunity and removals of toxins, stabilizing hormonal levels, and adding tone and flexibility to muscles. Massage increases flexibility, enhancing the ability to carry extra weight while also relieving aches and pains, leg cramps and muscle spasm.  The effects of relaxation and tension release add to the overall balance of emotions.

    Brilliant article,clears up a lot of misconceptions and massage releases oxytocin and the benefits during pregnancy are infinite, particularly after 37 weeks when oxytocin plays an important part in the onset of labour.
